JOBO portable storage device

At a recent lingerie shoot we had the opportunity to shoot in a brand-new, modern house, that had just been built and was getting it’s last finishing touches. Not even the owner had spent a night in it (thanks, Ray, you’re the man!).

Of course we tried to keep our equipment to an absolute minimum in order to protect the beautiful, brand-new wooden floors. One camera, one lens, a few lights (with gaffer taped lightstand-feet!), that was it.

In situations like this, when you don’t want to (or can’t) bring a computer, a portable storage device is a lifesaver. I had enough flash-cards to cover the whole shoot, but I wouldn’t have had a backup!

Jobo’s GigaVue Pro Evolution is a device like this. It has a built in card-reader, stores between 40GB and 120GB (depending on what model you buy), is battery operated, reads cards surprisingly fast, has great preview and thumbnails features and a very good screen.

When connected to your computer via USB, it shows up as an external drive so you can easily copy everything to your system.

People that shoot events (fashion shows, presentations, weddings) must love these little gadgets, because they can temporarily replace a computer, yet take very little space in your equipment bag.

Spain

Just returned from a fashion shoot in Mallorca / Spain.

The island of Mallorca is one of Spain’s Balearic Islands in the
Mediterranean sea. It’s one of the most popular European summer vacation
hotspots, which means the “tourist per square-foot” density in August is
extremely high.

Although Mallorca has dozens of beautiful outdoor locations (country houses,
old spanish farms, beaches) we shot at an an indoor / outdoor daylight studio
this time. Far away from mass tourism!

Why fly all the way to Spain to shoot in a studio? First of all the client was
European. Secondly, the concept called for clean white backgrounds.
Thirdly, Mallorca has very stable weather at this time of the year and the light
is beautiful! We have literally not seen a cloud in more than a week.

Last not least, Mallorca developed an impressive infrastructure for the photo
and film industry in recent years. Production companies, location scouts, studios,
rental houses, it’s all there.

If you ever want to shoot there check out spot-lightservice.com for studio and/or
equipment. VERY nice guys, good selection of equipment. They also have offices
in Madrid, Barcelona and nice studios in Marbella.

Ask for Olaf, a very nice dutch guy, he’ll help you out.

Italy

Rome
View from our hotel room

I have not been to ROME in several years, but from the moment
I arrived there I was asking myself “why not”?

Rome is a fascinating city! It takes a few moments to get adjusted to the traffic
because every vehicle seems to go at it’s top speed (yes, even the Ferraris!).

Once you made it across a few intersections alive though, you’ll see one of the
most beautiful cities in the world. A massive open air museum of historic sights
on the one hand, a shopping paradise for art and design on the other.
Classic, stylish, bursting with life.

Unfortunately I did not have enough time to explore thee city the way I would
have liked to, we had a tight schedule.

After Rome Lene & I went to Tuscany to meet some friends and
to have a well deserved vacation. 2 weeks of “Dolce Vita”, wonderful
Italian wines and the most delicious food on the planet.

We’ll have to double the gym-time when we get back home…..

Max is 1.0

IMG_2165

My man MAX is 1 year old today.

In his first year he ate countless pairs of shoes, 2 pairs of designer glasses,
lots of mail (mostly invoices…good boy!), an 80GB iPod, a Canon Ixus
camera, his babysitter’s cellphone and a sofa.

Even though we constantly “puppy proof” our house, he always finds a way….

But Lene, Stella (our other boxer) and I love him dearly anyway!

Happy Birthday Max!

NYC Permits

Things are not getting easier, that’s for sure.

Apparently the New York mayor’s office is trying to make changes on
shooting stills in NYC which is going to make shooting in the city much
more difficult.

Great!

What’s next - a license for carrying a concealed camera?

Sensor loupe

I ran into a new product that is an absolute “must have” for anyone
who owns a digital SLR camera.

It’s called SENSOR SCOPE and is a loupe that helps you locate
little dust-particles on your sensor. We clean our Canons thoroughly
before every single shoot, but with the scope we are now able to find
even the smallest little bits and can get rid of them BEFORE the shoot
- not afterwards in Photoshop.

iDay

iDay!

Discouraging images on CNN showed long lines and people with camping gear outside
the Apple stores. I thought I’ll give it try around 9.30 PM, drive to the Apple store -
just to check out how bad it is…..

I was in and out with my iPhone in my hand within 3 minutes! The store was packed
with salespeople with these nifty little portable credit card processing machines.

One of the guys looked at me and said: “iPhone?”. “Yes”. “Small or large?”. “Large”.
Credit card, receipt, “Here you go, have a nice evening”. Done.
Cool!

Is it everything I hoped it would be? No, it’s better!
It syncs beautifully with my Mac(s) and puts all my contact data and calendars right into
my pocket. The visual voicemail feature is amazing, email works flawlessly. Receiving
and viewing PDF attachments is finally not a problem anymore.

Locating places and directions in Google maps is a blast!
I know some people complain about the Internet connection speed but I think it’s
perfectly fine to quickly find some information, a place, a number, the news, the weather,
stockquotes, things like that.

Let’s face it: Who’s going to do a big online research project on a CELLPHONE ??

On the other hand - having your 25-minute vacation video in your pocket at all times?
Priceless!

Where do I sign up for the “Anonymous Electronic Gadget Addict” meetings ?

Partly cloudy

unknown

In all these years of shooting fashion all around the world I’ve only had a few
shoots where the weather was bad from the beginning to the end. On this
particular production for a Russian company it was bad in the beginning but
then got a little worse every day!

But there is always a way. Some carefully selected locations, a few umbrellas,
plastic-wrapped flash packs, a studio day in between…. and voila!
